My life is just beginning -- even at 76!

I started this webpage after I retired from active duty as pastor of Resurrection Church in San Diego in 2001 so that people who might be interested could keep in touch as I "helped out in various parishes." Shortly afterwards, while visiting my former teacher Fr. Larry Terrian, SS  in Paris with my friend Fr. Mike Sinor, Fr. Mike and I decided to check out Liseaux (where Theresa lived her short life). While Fr. Mike checked out the place, I sat quietly in the chapel.  When we left a while later I did so with the very clear notion that my life "is just beginning."

On my return to The States I underwent prostate surgery, my first ever hospital stay, and a long recovery period. Finally, I felt well enough to offer my Bishop some help -- if he had a short term task he needed done. A couple of month later I was assigned as Administrator of Ascension Parish in the Tierrasanta area of San Diego. It's a smaller parish near the giant Miramar Marine Corps Air Station. I fell in love with the place -- among other things it gave me the opportunity to swap "sea stories" with the many military families that live in this parish -- so I offered to stay on as Pastor and that offer was accepted. On reaching the special age of 75 I was required to retire (again) and have taken on  a new assignment as Managing Editor of the diocesan newspaper, The Southern Cross.  I also agreed to serve as State Chaplain for the Knights of Columbus for the 2008-9 year.  In addition I do some rereat work, and help out at several local parishes.

What more is there to tell?

Well, I'm a "delayed vocation," having spent 20+ years in the U. S. Navy. No, I was not a Navy Chaplain. I retired in 1976 as a Commander of the Line, with lots of different assignments, including that of CO of USS CURRENT, home ported in Hawaii and later CO of Assault Craft Unit One in San Diego. I'm a widower, with three children, several grand children and even four great grandchildren. My wife Elaine died in Sept 1969.

So, when the word is "Your life is just beginning"....I'm sure there is a lot more in store!

Forgive me for showing this photo over and over again, but it is truly a "once in a lifetime" photo! It was taken during my sabatical in Rome at the North American College in 1998. I just happened to be standing in the front row and suddenly there he was.
